ST. PETERSBURG, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- Russia plans to launch three modules for a lunar nuclear power station between 2033 and 2035, local media reported on Tuesday.
Vasily Marfin, general director of the S.A. Lavochkin Scientific and Production Association, said the Lunar Power Station space complex is designed to ensure soft, highly accurate and safe landings in the Moon's near-polar region, conduct contact research, select and study future landing sites and deploy the first modules of a lunar testing ground, TASS reported.
He said that a charging and power distribution station, a lunar rover and a nuclear power unit will be launched during the 2033-2035 period to support the construction of the lunar energy infrastructure.
The S.A. Lavochkin Scientific and Production Association is one of Russia's leading aerospace enterprises specializing in the development of automatic space systems. ■
