SHANGHAI, March 15 (Xinhua) -- Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli claimed his maiden Formula 1 victory with a pole-to-flag win at the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday, while both McLarens were prevented from starting the race with mechanical problems.

Starting from his first career pole position, Antonelli briefly lost the lead to the fast-starting Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton, but reclaimed it at the Turn 14 hairpin on lap two.

While the pack behind became embroiled in overtaking battles, Antonelli steadily pulled away at the front and, despite a late lock-up with three laps remaining, held on to become Italy's first Formula 1 race winner in 20 years.

"I'm speechless. I'm about to cry, to be honest. Thank you so much to my team. They helped me achieve this dream," a tearful Antonelli said afterward.

Antonelli's teammate George Russell finished second after an eventful race. The Briton, who had won Saturday's Sprint race, dropped to sixth by lap 15 as he struggled to bring his tyres up to temperature following a safety car period, but worked his way back through the field.

Mercedes' early-season strength was underlined when Russell passed both Ferraris and climbed into second by lap 29, although he was unable to challenge Antonelli, who by then held a lead of around eight seconds.

Behind the Mercedes pair, Hamilton beat Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc to third after an entertaining duel in which the two traded places several times. Over team radio, Leclerc described it as a "fun battle."

Hamilton's third place marked his first grand prix podium for Ferrari and his best result since the Las Vegas Grand Prix in 2024. On the evidence of the season so far, Ferrari appears to be the second-quickest team, though Mercedes currently holds the edge in most areas except race starts.

Haas' Ollie Bearman recovered from an early off-track moment to finish fifth in another strong performance, ahead of Pierre Gasly, who took an encouraging sixth place for Alpine.

Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson followed up his points finish in the Sprint with seventh, while Red Bull's Isack Hadjar finished eighth after spinning on the opening lap and recovering from the back of the field.

A race of relative attrition allowed Carlos Sainz to claim ninth for Williams' first points of the season, and Alpine's Franco Colapinto completed the top 10 after recovering from an earlier clash with Haas driver Esteban Ocon.

McLaren endured a disastrous afternoon as neither car took the start. An electronics problem sidelined Lando Norris, while Oscar Piastri, who also failed to start the previous round in Melbourne, was pushed off the grid just minutes before the formation lap.

Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto and Williams driver Alex Albon also failed to start, while Red Bull's Max Verstappen retired from fifth place. Aston Martin's difficult start to the season continued as both Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso failed to reach the finish.

After two rounds of the 2026 season, Russell leads the drivers' championship with 51 points, ahead of Antonelli on 47 and Leclerc on 33.

Mercedes tops the constructors' standings with 98 points, ahead of Ferrari on 67. Haas sits third with 17 points, all scored by Bearman.

The third round of the season will be the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka on March 29.
